To: Friends from IFHE

This is a joint letter from the IFHE President, Steve Rees, the IFHE Vice President, Kevin Poggenpoel, and the IFHE Second Vice President, Walt Vernon.

We need your help with three things, all of which should help YOU, YOUR CHAPTER, and YOUR MEMBERS.

First, we are determined to improve the value that IFHE provides to our A-Members, and to your members. To that end, we are asking the leadership from each chapter to have a virtual meeting with the three of us. In this meeting we would like to hear about your organization, the things you are working on, the things you are struggling with, and how the IFHE can better support you and your members. We will use this information to help us think about how we can do better. This should be a fun conversation, and it will help us to better serve you, so that your organization gets better value for the dues you pay.

Second, we are running two Awards Programs for the 2024 Congress in South Africa. We would like to tell you about them. We are especially excited about the opportunity to use our Carbon Awards program to help you have your OWN awards program in your country, using our platform. It will take a bit of training, and, if you are interested, we can set up a later training for your team to help you better understand how to use this platform for your benefit.

Finally, we have received a request for help from the World Health Organization. We need experts from around the world to help contribute our knowledge to their work on Guides for Sustainable Healthcare. We are hoping that your country could provide one or two experts who can be part of our IFHE Team.

So, it is very important that we talk soon. Please respond by clicking on one of the email options below, so that we can get something scheduled. If you have ideas for volunteers, please send them as soon as you can.

We thank you for being part of the IFHE Family. It is our goal to direct the efforts of IFHE to always improve, in how we serve you and your organization.

Be well and let’s talk.

As the ISTMA 16th World Conference draws near, we explore the tangible benefits of attending the All Africa Expo, which will coincide with the triennial world conference and general assembly.

Tapiwa Samanga, Group Chief Executive Officer at Production Technologies Association of South Africa (PtSA), a membership-based organisation aimed at promoting, protecting, and supporting the collective interests of the Tool, Die, Mould and Special Machining (TDM) industries of South Africa, sheds light on why delegates in the tooling and machining industry should not miss the expo.

What is the All Africa Expo and why was it necessary to organise the event?

This is the second time that PtSA is hosting the ISTMA World Conference and this time around, PtSA wants to maximise the opportunity as the TDM world will converge on South African shores. The opportunity to showcase African innovation and ingenuity could not be missed. Ultimately, the All Africa Expo will enable us to give African companies and our partners an opportunity to participate on a global platform and create new, valuable business relationships.

Why should African companies attend and exhibit at the All Africa Expo?

The All Africa Expo, which will run alongside the ISTMA 16th World Conference, will give an opportunity for African companies, investment agencies and countries to showcase various competencies to a selected continental and global audience. The target market will include potential investment partners, customers, agency partners and suppliers.

It is important to note that representatives from global tooling houses and associated industries, industry leaders and businesspeople from 22 countries and 23 ISTMA member associations (made up of more than 8000 companies) will attend the conference.

How does this access to the many global member companies that form part of ISTMA benefit African companies?

ISTMA, with more than 8 000 member companies grossing over $120 billion annually, provides a golden platform for Africa. By joining ISTMA, African associations get to deal directly with companies at the centre of several key global value chains in the automotive, plastics/packaging sector, aerospace, etc. Secondly, through ISTMA World conferences, like the one PtSA is hosting, webinars, newsletters and periodic reports, members are exposed to current trends in the TDM sector in terms of technology, science, and business intelligence.

What support is PtSA offering machining and tooling companies across the continent?

Besides organising this inaugural All Africa Expo and by hosting the 16th World Conference, PtSA is championing the formation of ISTMA Africa, a business platform for TDM entities across the continent to network, lobby and grow value for members. Secondly, PtSA is sharing with partner associations across the continent experiences from its globally acknowledged INTSIMBI programme mainly focusing on skills development and enterprise competitiveness. Great strides have been made with Zambia and Zimbabwe so far and discussions continue with Malawi, Uganda, Botswana, Kenya and Namibia.

What are some of the tangible take-aways/ benefits of attending the All Africa Expo?

The expo will provide valuable networking and business opportunities with potential customers, business partners, investors, and suppliers, as well as giving an overview of the latest technological developments in the manufacturing industry. Secondly, the interactions will provide real intel about how to invest on the continent.

This expo is the first of its kind, are there plans for this to be an annual event?

There is a niche that we have identified. The Manufacturing Indaba focuses on the downstream side of manufacturing, not the key elements of product design, tooling design, tooling manufacturing, and assembling systems. This is the hidden (but real) heartbeat of sustainable manufacturing. The All Africa Expo seeks to expose not only the extended value chain of manufacturing but also to create a platform for players to network and form viable platforms.

Are there any highlights delegates visitors and conference delegates should look forward to?

Along with the other activities, the exhibition will be a major highlight. It comprises carefully selected companies in the African TDM space. These will include tooling companies, manufacturing companies, machine tool suppliers and tooling importers. In the INDABA Invest in Africa conference on 9 November, presentations by Alec Erwin and Dr Abraham’s Muwanguzi on opportunities in the automotive sector on the continent will unpack valuable intel to guide our companies and other global players in the investment opportunities on the continent.

Entrance to the All Africa Expo is free but interested attendees need to register their attendance online.

The ISTMA 16th World Conference secures global key opinion leaders to share knowledge and insights on the tooling industry

This November, the International Special Tooling and Machining Association (ISTMA) – the world’s largest representative body for global tooling manufacturing – will host its next triennial world conference and general assembly in Cape Town.

The conference is bringing a line-up of key global opinion leaders and captains of industry in the tooling and machining industries.

Termed as the backbone of the manufacturing industry, the tooling industry was valued at over $200 billion in 2020 and is expected to grow to over $400 billion by 2030.

Tooling is made up of moulds, dies, jigs, fixtures, assembly systems, and gauges used to manufacture all manufactured goods, and is often referred to as providing the means of manufacturing all goods.

According to Allied Market Research, the designing and manufacturing of these tools directly affects the production quality of the manufacturing industry.

Tooling occupies a key position in the industrial supply chain, linking product development and the manufacturing process.

The proper implementation of the design, manufacture, and use of tooling determines the reliable and cost-effective manufacturing of products, which is a key growth factor for a manufacturing economy.

All manufacturing operations require tooling, with more than 60% of the effective cost of any manufactured product being directly related to the correct selection of the tooling used for the manufacturing process.

The ongoing maintenance and development of the tooling sector in a country has a positive and exponential impact on the manufacturing economy of that country.

South Africa and the African continent have much to offer the world as a supplier of Tooling Systems.

“South Africa and the rest of the African continent have a lot to offer the world as a supplier of Tooling Systems,” said Bob Williamson, President of ISTMA World.

While there is some considerable development needed in the tooling industry in Africa, South Africa boasts advanced capacity to design and manufacture world-class assembly systems which it supplies to the international automotive industries. When it comes to dies and moulds, the South African industry provides in the region of 10% of the local needs of the manufacturing sector.

South Africa also has by far the most developed tooling sector for tools, dies and moulds (TDM), however small pockets of excellence exist which are focused on supporting the packaging industry in countries like Zimbabwe, Ghana, Kenya and Angola.

“It must be noted that all manufacturing requires tooling and without a strong and vibrant tooling sector, South Africa would be at the risk of de-industrialising,” said Williamson.

South Africa has developed an acknowledged world-class and accredited programme for the training of toolmakers, which has the potential to become the world standard in toolmaker training.

This uniquely South African solution is a product of the government and industry partnership INTSIMBI FPTI, which is led by the Production Technologies Association of South Africa (PtSA) and developed in collaboration with international partners to address the needs of the TDM sector in providing a competency-based toolmaker apprenticeship programme to support manufacturing.

“The modern-day manufacturing industry is characterised by technological advancements. The fourth industrial revolution (4IR) represents a giant leap towards digitalisation and concepts like artificial intelligence, robotics, the internet of things (IoT), genetic engineering and quantum computing are fast becoming the building blocks of the manufacturing industry of the future. The PtSA TDM Powered toolmaker apprenticeship training programme was designed to future-proof the careers of those individuals in the industry,” said Tapiwa Samanga, Chief Executive Officer at PtSA.

Williamson noted that for Africa to become a serious contender in the global tooling industry, government and industry partners need to scale up the INTSIMBI programme significantly and train more toolmakers and facilitate more enterprise development in the tooling sector.

“In terms of policies and regulations, there needs to be increased support for the TDM sector. Relevant bodies and government need to acknowledge the role and achievements of this critical industry sector in the development of the economy as well as increased investment allowances. Import duties on critical commodities such as tools steels and accessories need to be reduced or removed altogether,” said Williamson.

The 16th International Special Tooling and Machining Association World Conference (ISTMA 2023) which will coincide with the All Africa Expo, will facilitate the necessary dialogue to find solutions to these and other issues in the industry.

The theme of the conference this year is sustainable development, technical advances in tooling manufacturing and skills development. It will bring together representatives from global tooling houses, associated industries, industry leaders and businesspeople from 21 countries and 22 ISTMA World member associations comprising of more than 8 000 companies.

“I encourage everyone who is in the sector to attend the ISTMA 16th World Conference and be part of the rich conversations that will take place at the conference,” concluded Williamson.

Sixteenth ISTMA World Conference will focus on sustainable development, technical advances and skills development.

The City of Cape Town in South Africa will host the 16th International Special Tooling and Machining Association World Conference (ISTMA 2023) from 6 to 10 November 2023. The theme of the conference will be sustainable development, technical advances in tooling manufacturing and skills development.
The conference will bring together representatives from global tooling houses, associated industries, industry leaders and businesspeople from 22 countries and 23 ISTMA member associations made up of 8 000 companies to discuss:

  • Latest trends and technological developments in tooling manufacturing.
  • Post-pandemic and post-war strategies for companies and the sector.
  • International and regional trade, government regulations and international trading conditions.

“ISTMA World is the hub of expertise and a key cooperation and knowledge sharing platform for the worldwide mould, die, special tooling and precision machining industry. The event will create invaluable exposure and networking opportunities for the local TDM industry,” said Bob Williamson, President of ISTMA World.

This year, the ISTMA 16th World Conference will coincide with the All Africa Expo – an event that aims to give African countries a platform to showcase their manufacturing and tooling abilities and make their investment case to international companies during an Invest in Africa Indaba. Manufacturers on the continent will also be exposed to the world’s foremost tooling technology and influential role-players.

“The All Africa Expo will be the first platform to boast Africa’s spirit of invention and its pockets of manufacturing excellence and will offer unprecedented global networking opportunities to the continent. The All-Africa Exhibition will not only showcase African capability and capacity, but it will also enable the rest of the world to carve out opportunities and build partnerships with their African counterparts,” added Williamson.

Hosted by the Production Technologies Association of South Africa (PtSA) and managed by SBS Conferences and Exhibitions, the ISTMA World conference and the All Africa Expo will offer globally relevant technical presentations, platforms to share strategies for companies in the sector, as well as skilfully planned and matched networking sessions for the regions and the world.

Tapiwa Samanga, Chief Executive Officer at PtSA said: “Our mission at PtSA is to promote, protect and support the collective interests of the Tool, Die, Mould and Special Machining industries of South Africa to continuously support the growth and development of all manufacturing sectors. If you look at the country’s tooling and machining business, it is well-defined and all it needs is assistance with resources to expand. This conference is bringing insight into those resources in which local and global companies can tap into.”

Looking further afield, Samanga adds that Africa currently lacks an industry-required home-grown skills base. PtSA’s objective is to help Africa acquire the required abilities, curriculum alignment and to facilitate the easy cross-border movement of artisans.

“Africa’s industrial development can be enhanced through the creation of business clusters, positioning the continent to gain a competitive edge – with the support of abundant resources and skilled labour, hubs located in countries like South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Egypt and Morocco will make the continent a leader in the sector,” concludes Samanga.

Don’t miss out on this expertly organised global conference, registration is now open.
